Columbus Day and Cancel Culture

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped.

George Orwell, 1984

Columbus Day has been celebrated in America since 1792. However, Communists, socialists, radicals, and “useful idiots” want to end this celebration and replace it with Indigenous Peoples ‘Day. After the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, a 46-year-old African American, in Minneapolis by Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, the communist and anarchist Black Lives Matter and Antifa organizations led almost 600 violent riots in cities across America. These criminals killed and injured several hundred police officers and innocent people. Police stations, courthouses, homes, and many businesses were burned.

During these riots many statues of Columbus were destroyed, moved, or covered in many cities. In addition, many confederate and union generals, several of our presidents, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses Grant, as well as saints of the Catholic Church like Junípero Serra, who founded the first nine Franciscan missions in California, were destroyed completely or vandalized. The destruction by burning and serious vandalism included Catholic and Protestant Churches as well as synagogues. Communists everywhere in the world want to cancel culture and erase the history of nations to implant totalitarian communist regimes.

Milan Kundera wrote a novel titled The Book of Laughter and Forgetting in 1979. The novel was written in Czech but originally published in French and later in English. Kundera described the political situation in his native nation of Czechoslovakia where history and memory were being manipulated and distorted by the communists rulers in power. He wrote the following: “The first step in liquidating a people is to erase its memory. Destroy its books, its culture, its history. Then have somebody write new books, manufacture a new culture, invent a new history. Before long that nation will begin to forget what, it is and what it was. The world around it will forget even faster.”

Sadly, this is what is happening in America today. The Marxist distortion of American history and culture is being taught in public schools and universities across America. It is being pushed by the two national teacher unions, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association, whose leaders are Marxists as well as by the leaders of the Marxist Democratic party. They are implementing the communist curricula of Critical Race Theory, the Pre-K-12th grade Black Lives Matter, and the New York Times 1619 Project written by the racist communist Nikole Hanna-Jones. Parents across America are complaining about the teaching of communism to their children and the Department of Justice has asked the FBI to investigate these parents who are now called “Domestic Terrorists.”

On June 25, 2020, the Federalist website reported that when Nikole Hanna-Jones was a student at the University of Notre Dame in 1995, she wrote an article titled “Modern Savagery” in which she accused the “white race” of being the “biggest murderer, rapist, pillager, and thief of the modern world,” That horrible article was published in the November 21, 1995, issue of The Observer of the University of Notre Dame. Hanna-Jones wrote that “Christopher Columbus and those like him were no different than Hitler.”

Hannah-Jones wrote in the New York Times 1619 Project the following: “The white race even today, the descendants of these savage people pump drugs and guns into the Black community, pack Black people into the squalor of segregated urban ghettos and continue to be bloodsuckers in our communities. Yet, it was Columbus that set the platforms for these racist American institutions.” Hannah-Jones studied Black History and has a master’s degree in journalism. She is not a historian. Several well-respected scholars have denounced her New York Times 1619 Project as faked and distorted history.

Can we really trust this racist reporter to write an objective history of America? She is someone who hates whites. The New York Times 1619 Project incorrectly makes slavery rather than freedom the central and defining idea of the American experience.

Marxist Nikole Hanna-Jones said that free enterprise and capitalism are racist. She insists “anti-black racism runs in the very DNA of this country.” This is a Marxist distorted history of America along the same ideas of Howard Zinn’s communist book, A People’s History of the United States. Shamefully, Nikole Hanna-Jones was given an underserved Pulitzer Prize. This shows how far cultural Marxism has penetrated our institutions.

The first Columbus Day celebration in the United States took place on October 12, 1792, when the Columbian Order of New York, known as Tammany Hall, held an event to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the landing of Columbus in a Bahamian island. Columbus named the island San Salvador. Columbus sailed aboard the Santa María and two other captains, the Pinzón brothers, sailed on La Niña and La Pinta. The voyage was sponsored by Queen Isabella of Castile.

Many Italian Americans continue to observe Columbus Day as a celebration of their heritage as well as many of the more than 62 million Hispanics in America. In Colorado, Angelo Noce lobbied successfully, and Columbus Day was proclaimed in that state by Governor Jesse F. McDonald in 1905. It was made a statutory holiday in 1907.

When a criminal mob in New Orleans assassinated 11 Italian immigrants. President Benjamin Harrison declared Columbus Day as a one-time national celebration. Thus, the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s voyage was celebrated in 1892.

In 1934, as a result of the efforts of the Knights of Columbus, Congress passed a statute stating: “The President is requested to issue each year a proclamation (1) designating October 12 as Columbus Day; (2) calling on United States government officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Columbus Day; and (3) inviting the people of the United States to observe Columbus Day, in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies that express the public sentiment befitting the anniversary of the discovery of America.”

In 1966, Mariano A. Lucca founded the National Columbus Day Committee, which lobbied to make Columbus Day a federal holiday. These efforts were successful and legislation created Columbus Day a federal holiday. It was signed by President Lyndon Johnson on June 28, 1968, to be effective beginning in 1971. Today Columbus Day is generally observed by banks, Wall Street, federal agencies, most state government offices, many businesses, and most school districts.

On October 8, 2021, the cognitive impaired and very corrupt President Joe Biden proclaimed that October 11 would be recognized by the federal government as Indigenous Peoples ‘Day. In order not to lose votes by Italian Americans, he also issued a proclamation acknowledging Columbus Day a federal holiday and the contributions of Italian Americans.

On October 10, 2022, Christopher Tremoglie wrote an article titled “Columbus Day, a Clash of Civilizations” that was published by the Washington Examiner. He explained that the date of October 12 has become a day to bash Western civilization. The extreme radical Left, multiculturalist universities professors, and various Native American front groups have used the occasion “to recite various atrocity stories and criticisms of the settlement and conquest of the Americas by Europeans.”

Tremoglie wrote that Native Americans are presented by the mainstream media, Hollywood, and politicians as victims. They are portrayed as peaceful, kind, and generous human beings, who were living in a paradise but were murdered and enslaved by vicious, greedy, white, Christian men. Tremoglie pointed out that the new conservative leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, said during a recent speech in Spain that only the Taliban topple statues. She will not accept this barbaric behavior by the Left — nor should any American or European accept this attempt to distort Western history.

Tremoglie concluded his article by stating the following: “This practice of perverting Columbus and the legacy of European settlement in the Americas underscores the need for conservatives to learn about their heritage, ensure that the correct history is taught to their descendants, and preserve and protect their culture. Activism to protect your heritage and culture is no vice.”

The cognitive impaired and China compromised President Joe Biden, pressured by the communists in his political party, declared that America would celebrate Indigenous Peoples ‘Day. But not wanting to lose the votes of millions of Italian Americans, he issued on October 7, 2022, a Proclamation to celebrate Columbus Day:

A Proclamation on Columbus Day, 2022

In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed from the Spanish port of Palos de la Frontera on behalf of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II, but his roots trace back to Genoa, Italy.  The story of his journey remains a source of pride for many Italian Americans whose families also crossed the Atlantic.  His voyage inspired many others to follow and ultimately contributed to the founding of America, which has been a beacon for immigrants across the world.

Many of these immigrants were Italian, and for generations, Italian immigrants have harnessed the courage to leave so much behind, driven by their faith in the American dream — to build a new life of hope and possibility in the United States. Today, Italian Americans are leaders in all fields, including government, health, business, innovation, and culture.

Things have not always been easy; prejudice and violence often stalled the promise of equal opportunity.  In fact, Columbus Day was created by President Harrison in 1892 in response to the anti-Italian motivated lynching of 11 Italian Americans in New Orleans in 1891.  During World War II, Italian Americans were even targeted as enemy aliens.  But the hard work, dedication to community, and leadership of Italian Americans in every industry make our country stronger, more prosperous, and more vibrant.

The Italian American community is also a cornerstone of our Nation’s close and enduring relationship with Italy — a vital NATO Ally and European Union partner.  Today, the partnership between Italy and the United States is at the heart of our efforts to tackle the most pressing global challenges of our time, including supporting Ukraine as it defends its freedom and democracy.

In commemoration of Christopher Columbus’s historic voyage 530 years ago, the Congress, by joint resolution of April 30, 1934, and modified in 1968 (36 U.S.C. 107), as amended, has requested the President proclaim the second Monday of October of each year as “Columbus Day.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim October 10, 2022, as Columbus Day.  I direct that the flag of the United States be displayed on all public buildings on the appointed day in honor of our diverse history and all who have contributed to shaping this Nation.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this
seventh day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-seventh.

                               JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.

President Joe Biden ignored the more than 62 million Hispanic in America who are proud of their heritage. A very large segment of this population value the contributions of Christopher Columbus to America and the Western World. There are radical Latinos in America who despised their Hispanic heritage as do communists in Latin America like Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro. But we cannot allow these radicals to distort and cancel Christopher Columbus from our books.

Conclusion

As a former middle school and high school principal, region director and region superintendent, associate superintendent for curriculum, and interim deputy superintendent of schools of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, I would have never allowed the teaching of a distorted history and culture in our schools. The implementation of the communist curricula of Critical Race Theory, the Pre-K-12th grade Black Lives Matter, and the New York Times 1619 Project must be banned everywhere in America.

The teaching of pornographic sexual education, Drag Queen Reading Hour, and the transgender agenda must also be stopped. Books like Howard Zinn’s A People History of the United States must also be banned. The anti-American book written by Zinn is biased and it offers a distorted view of American history, as was documented by noted historians from prominent universities. The minds of our students should not be poisoned by books such as Zinn’s. By his own admission, Howard Zinn considered himself as an anarchist, socialist, and Marxist. Zinn’s FBI file revealed that he participated in various organizations that were considered Communist fronts.

Our great Governor Ron DeSantis has forbidden the teaching of Critical Race Theory and the teaching of sex in kindergarten to the third grade. Parents and conservatives need to continue fighting to stop the teaching of communism in schools. Conservatives need to fight strongly against the Cultural Marxism of Cancel Culture and demand the teaching about America exceptionalism and greatness. We live in the most generous and greatest nation in the planet. To achieve all these objectives and to save America from communism, we need to vote for Republicans in the midterm elections and to pray to God every day.
